I've been playing around with Lion, Apple's new version of Mac OS/X. In general I really like the new features and will very soon be purchasing a Magic Trackpad to go with my iMac. One feature that I can see myself using (if only to help me focus) is full screen applications. Apple added a little icon in the top right corner to all windows that allows you to make the app full screen. For applications that are full screen aware (like the new version of Mail) you just hit Escape or CMD-Shift-F and you go back to the windowed mode. However, for some reason, once you put Terminal in full screen mode it stays there for good. Even after you exit and unload the app (e.g. with CMD-q) and then restart. Neither Escape nor CMD-Shift-F seem to work to reverse the full screen process. Eventually I stumbled on the fact that when you move the mouse pointer up past the top of the screen, the menu bar appears (it may take a second). The menu bar now includes a new icon for reversing full screen mode. Hurray!

Unfortunately, I don't see that restore icon in Chrome.
me either...
CMD+SHIFT+F worked for Chrome. I had the same issue.
Me either.. i cant exit full screen in Chrome..
You do need to install the brand new Lion OS/X upgrade first. You won't see the full screen icons otherwise.
Peter, with the current version of Chrome browser you get the full-screen button to get into full screen mode but theres no blue button to return to normal mode. You have to use CMD+Shift+F to get back again.
Given the comments I think I've been somewhat unclear. While Chrome does have a full screen mode (as do most browser) the new operating system upgrade from Apple (called OS/X 10.7 aka 'Lion') allows any application to go full screen. However, most applications have not yet been written to recognize the hooks to go back from full screen. For instance, Terminal just stays fullscreen. So if you are in full screen mode and mouse "past" the top of the screen you will see the icon to restore your app (any app) back to its original size.
not in chrome, as the other guys say, you have to ctrl sft and F to exit, otherwise your stuck!
Dang! You're right. For Chrome it's CMD-Shift-F.
Thanks Peter. I had the same problem...
for an update that seems to be all about shortcuts, this is pretty embarrassing.
I was exited about the full screen feature for a minute, then got really upset about the lack of easy way to exit out full screen. There's no restore icon. Under "View" menu, item "Exit Full Screen". Or just remember this "short cut": Command+Shift+F ! You know what that "F" means!
Chrome Ver: 12.0.742.122 the button to return back from full screen mode is under Customize and Control Google Chrome button (the wrench on the far right). to the right of the Zoom option you will see the button which brings you back from full screen mode....
It looks like there is a button to close full screen mode in the most recent version, you just have to click the wrench in the upper right corner and it's under Zoom. That's dumb, comon Google, you're confusing people here.
I wish they'd have made it just a normal fullscreen mode, so all the browser buttons were still accessible without scrolling to the top to drop them down.
Also, the dock in unavailable in fullscreen mode, which is also a bit annoying.
I was stuck in Safari just now. I found out I had to use Option-Command-F by clicking the left-topmost pixel, which opened up the Apple menu, and dragging to the right to the View menu.
Sorry for double-posting, but I think my problem described in my previous post is a Safari bug.
If you open Safari in full-screen, use Mission Control to open any other window in any other desktop, then use Mission Control to get back to Safari (double click it near the top of the screen), Safari won't show the Menu bar.
THANK YOU!!!!
The problem with Terminal was exactly what I was experiencing. What you said worked perfectly.
... John
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!.....Chrome was KILLING me now I know about cmd+shift+F
I was stuck too, even with Apple Mail, Safari and iCal. What undid it for me was control-command-F.
It's funny reading this, because for me the learning was in the key combo's to exit full screen mode, not the icon in the menu bar. Either way there was some great learnin' to be be had here today.
Thanks! Love full screen. Hate the arcane way or getting out of it.
Great. I was searching how to exit because the escape key wasn't solving the problem Thanks for the great tip.
I have the new wireless keyboard and ctrl + cmd + f seemed the only way to exit fullscreen.. New to macs, absolutely loving lion OS so far.
THANK YOU
Hi,
For those having trouble reversing / exiting from fullscreen like in google chrome, you just hover your mouse on the very top to view the menu and on the upper right you will see highlight blue icon after the spotlight icon... just hit it and you're fine.

This is so annoying! Why couldn't they just let you exit with the escape button? I just crashed my laptop to get out of the stupid dictionary app that I wasn't even trying to launch. Ugh, we're not off to a good start with this OS.
Thanks. I was afraid I'd have to call Apple to get out of full screen. This worked.
I agree with the other posters in saying "Thank you!". I was stuck in the terminal - embarrassing when you're the IT staff!
Thank you Peter
Thank you, Peter
Thanks! moving the cursor up and waiting, the bar did indeed appear!
have you tried double ESC, it works like a charm c'mon guys!
Thank you, thank you!
Thank you. I thought I would never be able to shut down photo booth but moving arrow to top worked.
THANK YOU-- I moved the cursor up to the top until it disappeared and voila- I got the tool bar that allowed me to go to view and then exit full screen!
Thanks - I knew there'd be some clever of getting out of it. Your tip worked perfectly for me in Chrome.
try command control F to toggle full screen mode on and off
Thank you.
Maybe they have a reason for abandoning the 'escape' idiom, but a one-time alert message to let you know the replacement would be the decent thing to do.
